The dental pulp is the soft area in the center of a tooth where the veins, nerves, and connective tissues are located. If the dental pulp becomes infected, Dr. Mark L. Pitel may recommend root canal treatment. During root canal treatment, our dentist will remove the infected pulp, clean the tooth thoroughly, and seal the tooth. If you experience any of the following symptoms, root canal treatment may be necessary:
- Severe toothache
- Tooth sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures
- Discoloration of a tooth
- Swelling and pain in the gums
- A pimple on the gums that will not go away
To perform root canal treatment, our dentist will first take X-rays of your root canals to examine their shape and to check for infection in the surrounding bone. An access hole is then made in the tooth. The infected dental pulp, bacteria, and debris are removed through the hole. Our dentist will use root canal files to clean the tooth all the way down the roots. The tooth is then sealed with a rubber compound and a sealer paste. The access hole is closed with a dental filling.
