When visiting the dentist, you know he will ask that one question, “Do you floss daily?” If you answer in the negative, you are not alone. Your dentist is primed for this answer and ready with a heartfelt lecture. They know that despite its tremendous benefits, most patients neglect daily flossing, floss infrequently, or do not floss at all.

Research by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) provides grim news. In the first national study specifically designed to determine how many people floss their teeth, they found that only 30 percent of people floss daily, 32 percent never floss, and just over 37 percent report flossing only once in a while.

While flossing only adds a couple of minutes to your oral health routine, the benefits are manifold. Plaque build-up between teeth cannot be entirely removed by brushing alone and left to do damage the sticky, bacteria-laden substance will end in tooth decay, gum disease, and eventually tooth loss.

You can avert this disagreeable outcome by finding a flossing product that you will consistently use each day. Fortunately, there are more options than ever before to make the procedure easier and faster than ever. If you are not happy with the typical string floss that most everyone associates with flossing, try the disposable picks that are pre-strung. Still too bothersome? There are water flossers that make the task almost enjoyable and are made specifically for those who have difficulty with string flossing. Who doesn’t like a pleasant spritzing gum massage?

You’ll find that taking a few minutes to floss each day will pay many dividends in oral health.
