Do you want your child to grow into a strong and healthy smile? If so, there are things you need to do to keep their teeth and gums in tip-top shape. Fortunately, Dr. Mark L. Pitel and our dental team are here to help you do just that!
The first thing we recommend is to encourage oral hygiene. Your child needs to brush their teeth twice a day, floss their smile once a day, and rinse their mouth daily. If they cannot do these things, you can clean their teeth and gums for them. Remember: If your child is younger than 3 years old, they do not need toothpaste. When you clean their smile, try to make it a fun experience.
The second thing we recommend is to monitor what your child eats. It’s best to give your child tooth-healthy snacks (like raw vegetables, fruit, and dairy products) and limit sugar consumption. These healthy treats can strengthen the teeth and wash bacteria away; the sugar can create cavities.
The third thing we recommend is to consider protecting your child’s teeth with dental sealants. Dental sealants are thin barriers that are beneficial for children who have permanent molars. Sealants can cover the teeth and protect them from bacteria and plaque growth, which can help them prevent major dental issues. This is helpful because most of the time molars are tough to clean.
